I am turning into an uncle, which probably explains my developing an interest in cooking.
Perhaps it because it is an essential skill in life, or perhaps it is all that stuff on TV. Either way, I am looking to unleash my inner auntie, and this blog documents my journey as I start out from uber-noob to apprentice noob. Could also be because PM Lee asked us to become hawkers. What's fascinating about cooking is that it is a mixture of both science and art. Elements of Physics - heat transfer, surface area; Chemistry: mixing different flavours and ingredients; Art: because there are so many methods and styles to preparing a dish. Food is also something that is relevant to everybody (this thing about relevance is what i say for all my job interviews) and more importantly, good food makes people happy.
Another advantage to home cooking is that you know what goes into your food. How much oil, salt and MSG. For the same reason, having seen the amount of milk, cream and butter required in baking recipes, I feel quite reluctant to go into baking since I will not really want to eat my food, no matter how good it smells. And at the start of this journey, it is quite likely that I will be the (only) one willing to eat my food.
Being lazy and stingy, my motto is to keep it simple, inexpensive, and healthy. My focus will mainly be on meats and vegs. Another reason is also that Ms S likes her protein :)
My dream is to be a house husband, failing which, my retirement job is to be a school canteen uncle. Another fantasy is to take part in the next series of Wok Stars, if there is one (because I am not ready at the moment).
